MCCC Women’s Tennis had a strong performance at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament held in Sumter, South Carolina May 2nd-6th. Mercer finished 15th in the country, with 8 points and three points ahead of RCSJ Gloucester who won the Region 19 Championship over MCCC by 6 points.
The Mustangs opened the tournament strong with wins at 3rd Singles by Sarvin Salehi and at 4th Singles by Ariadna Acosta Camacho. The next day Mercer’s 1st Doubles team of Julia Fillat Ferrer and Aida Torrealba won their opening match 6-1, 6-2. Fillat Ferrer and Torrealba also won points with wins in the backdraw or consolation matches. Fillat Ferrer got an 8-5 win in a 1st Singles Consolation match and Torrealba got an 9-7 win at 2nd Singles.
Mercer was coached by Qasim Khan and Barb Pleva. Khan was very pleased with his team’s performance at the National Championship. “The girls gave their best effort against excellent competition and that’s all you can ask for. To end up finishing higher than RCSJ Gloucester who beat us in the Region Championship made the experience that much sweeter.”
