With April Fool’s Day falling this week, it gives us a chance to remind everyone that MCCC’s athletic teams are no joke. In fact, Mercer has one of the best athletic programs in the country which has helped the college gain national attention from the success of its student athletes.
In the fall, Mercer men’s soccer went 19-0-2 and reached the final 4 of the NJCAA National Tournament. The Mustangs finished the season ranked 2nd in the nation.
This winter Mercer men’s basketball won the Region 19 Championship and was a win away from advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament. MCCC women’s basketball was ranked 14th in the country in January, the program’s highest ranking in over 20 years.
The spring sports season has gotten underway with all five teams looking to repeat their success from the 2025 season. MCCC men’s tennis finished as National Runner-Ups with five All-Americans. Women’s tennis had their highest finish ever at the DI National Tournament last spring. Mercer softball reached the NJCAA World Series and won both the Region 19 and Atlantic A District Championship. Men’s lacrosse won the 2025 Region 19 Championship in overtime at Del Tech. This week Mercer baseball was ranked 20th in the DII National Poll.
The on court and on field performances are not the only thing Mercer’s student athletes take serious but their performance in the classroom as well. For the 2024-2025 academic year MCCC had a record 30 NJCAA Academic All-Americans (a GPA of 3.6 or higher for the 2024-25 academic year along with 24 or more credits passed). Four teams (men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s tennis) were NJCAA All-Academic Teams that had an overall team GPA of 3.0 or higher for the 2024-2025 academic year.
Athletics has helped put Mercer County College in the national spotlight and stage and that is something to take seriously as one of the top junior college athletic programs in the country. And not only do MCCC student athletes put the college on the map for their athletic success but for their academic success as well. Being a student athlete at MCCC is no joke and Mercer’s student athletes continue to prove that.
